"Together with our friend Stephan, we infused the refreshing herbal tea composition Gin Soul with the fine tart botanicals soul of GIN SUL."
Esin Rager, samova founder
The history of Gin Soul
Anyone who knows samova Master Tea-Jay Errol knows that he has a great weakness for special and good fragrances. He loves and collects them, for example in the form of perfumes, shower gels - and of course tea ingredients. In 2014, he spontaneously felt like mixing two of his shower gels and made an extraordinary discovery: the new mix smelled like gin!Errol immediately had to think of Stephan Garbe, an inspired former advertising copywriter who had hung up his old job a few months earlier and founded a small and fine distillery in Hamburg. Stephan had answered the call of his vision: to produce a gin made from botanicals from his new adopted home in southern Portugal, GIN SUL. Errol thought further: couldn't samova also create a gin tea from these herbs? He asked his boss Esin the next question directly on the phone: "Tell me, would you like to meet Stephan Garbe?"
Esin thought it was a great idea to interpret a gin as an herbal tea: "We could call the tea variety Gin Soul, as we breathe the herbal soul of GIN SUL into it!" This would allow samova and GIN SUL to please their fans not only with alcoholic tea cocktails, but also to serve non-alcoholic gin long drinks based on cooled herbal tea to all people who want to enjoy without percentages!
The rest is history: Esin was eager to meet Stephan Garbe, and Stephan was also enthusiastic about the idea of this cooperation. A short time later, they were all standing in the beautiful Altona Spirits Manufactory with its sparkling copper kettles and blue-patterned tiles on the wall. Stephan, Esin and Errol hit it off right away, brewing GIN SUL's botanicals as tea. They simply experimented with the amounts of ingredients until it tasted right. Only the cistus had to be replaced by lemongrass, as it was not allowed to be used as a tea ingredient in Germany. This was the birth of our specialty Gin Soul - and of the wonderful friendship between the two Hamburg originals GIN SUL and samova.
Like many, probably in artificial fog under strobe lights. Three tired ice cubes shook in the long drink glass to accompany the bass and the gin and tonic shimmered in the black light. It was still a long way to the perfect gin and tonic with a view of the Atlantic in Portugal.
This comes first and foremost through a very close friendship with Miguel, who showed me his country from the perspective of a Portuguese. The country is brittle and warm-hearted at the same time. At some point, it was no longer enough to roam the country in an old camper van and then I bought a small house in my favorite place in the western Algarve. It's now my second home.
