The story of Inner Light
At the beginning of 2011, our business friend Katrin Täubig told us that she had recently started her own business. After many years in the media industry, where she had also carried out cooperations with samova, she dared a new start and decided to study interior design & interior design by distance learning. In order to also get on the track of the well-being factor of this professional field, she completed a training as a certified Feng Shui consultant. And founded her brand Healing Home Design. samova creator Esin was immediately enthusiastic: firstly because Katrin - just like Esin herself - took her destiny into her own hands as an entrepreneur and turned her passion into a profession. And secondly, because the theme of Feng Shui fit so well with samova's modern tea culture...
Shortly thereafter, at the Star Wars movie night in her living room at home, Esin was enlightened not only by the projector, but also by Jedi Master Yoda. "I'm developing a tea on feng shui and mindfulness, the tools of the good side of the Force," she decided.
In the search for the right ingredients, the choice fell quite quickly on Lemongrass und Ginger. These aromatic and effective plants resulted in a strong character and at the same time refreshing spicy taste. Just like the harmony teaching Feng Shui, they found their origin in Asia. Were missing only tasty Green tea-leaves from a particularly harmonious organic tea garden. Esin quickly found what he was looking for: The Idulgashina tea plantation in Sri Lanka was not only certified organic and Fairtrade early on, but also known for taking good care of its workers and involving them in important decisions. The foundation for Inner Light was laid.
Idulgashina Organic Fairtrade Tea Garden
Pioneers in organic tea and fair trade
Idulgashina in Sri Lanka can be described as a very special tea plantation. With farsightedness and out of inner conviction, the people behind the plantation already opted for organic cultivation and sustainability at the end of the 1980s - completely unusual at that time. The plantation soon received official status from the Export Development Board in Sri Lanka as the country's first organic tea producer. And since 1994, the company has been certified with the Fairtrade symbol, also making Idulgashina one of the first tea plantations in the world with this seal of quality.
The tea plantation is located in the southwest of Sri Lanka, in the province of Uva, known for the highest mountains of the island nation. The Idulgashina garden is located just below the famous Horton Plains and consists of 16 tea smallholdings with a total area of 350 hectares. The altitude of the gardens varies from 1000 to 2000 meters above sea level. The tea factory is located at the top of the Haputale Horton Plains mountain range at 1800 meters and produces about 200 tons of black and green tea annually in best organic quality - with the typical refreshing and slightly pungent taste of the Uva province. From there samova obtains the Green tea for the composition "Inner Light".
In addition to the premium quality tea, the fair trade conditions of the plantation have also been a reason for the cooperation. In Idulgashina, there are good living conditions for pickers: there is clean drinking water, electricity, pharmacies, medical care, daycare centers, schools, and cultural and sports activities for the 1100 workers and their families. Rajaratnam Gnanasekaran, Project Manager of Idulgshina Organic Tea Garden, says, "The workers have gained dignity, rights, freedom, independence, better housing and health. And this improvement in living standards benefits the work and thus the quality of the tea, as well as the protection of the environment."
