I'm a little Friesian boy and live behind the dikeOur friend Thorn from East Friesland developed the secret recipe for "Easy Friesy" with us: fine organic black teas from Africa and India tell of eventful and modern times. This real "tea story" began with colonization and was always closely linked to the development of trade and the race of sailing fleets for ever shorter routes from Asia and Africa to Europe. Today, in the modern tea culture of samova, we honor this specialty as the most experienced in decelerating. Only a few insiders know that light beer from Hamburg was originally considered the main drink and food in East Frisia until reports of a decline in customs and work declined in the 16th and 17th centuries. Protestant preachers then praised tea as a God-given drink "against the devil" and the aromatic hot drink became popular among the population as a healthy alternative to beer. To date, no people drink more tea than the East Frisians, who - statistically speaking - enjoy around 300 liters per head per year. In December 2016, the German UNESCO Commission included the East Frisian tea ceremony in the nationwide directory of intangible cultural heritage. According to this, tea culture has an identity-creating function, structures everyday life and daily rhythms, creates social cohesion and is a recognition feature for the region.

It is our faithful companion: the tinplate tin has been the container for loose tea in our collection since the early days of samova in 2002. And the tins are a perennial favorite at samova for good reason. To be more precise: for several reasons.

Right from the start, Esin Rager, an organic tea enthusiast, was looking for a packaging solution that could meet her various requirements. The samova founder initially only offered loose tea and needed a container that would protect the tea's aroma and produce as little packaging waste as possible. On top of this, the container needed to be refillable and attractive. From day one, the samova brand has stood for modern tea culture and sustainability.

High quality, high recognition value

The ideal solution was soon found: the storage jar made completely and repeatedly recyclable tinplate. Since then, the iconic tins have made the samova collection extremely recognizable, especially in combination with the tongue-in-cheek and casual names of our teas. For more than 20 years, almost all teas from our range have been available as loose teas in these tins.

Which is better, tea bags or loose tea? A question that cannot and probably will never be answered adequately. The tea bag may be the quicker and less complicated solution. Nevertheless, there are many tea drinkers who don't want to miss out on the greater variety, their own portioning, the full aroma of large-volume ingredients and the almost meditative ceremony of infusing loose tea.

The tinplate tin is permanently recyclable

As mentioned at the beginning, samova's storage jars are made of tinplate. This is a thin sheet of steel whose surface is coated with tin. It is used in the food industry for packaging such as cans, screw caps or crown caps. Thanks to its magnetic properties, tinplate can be easily sorted out of packaging waste and recycled. The recycling rate of the material is around 90 percent. Tinplate is considered the most durable type of packaging in the food industry and can be used again and again in steelworks after sorting.

This means that samova cans remain in the circular economy for a very long time. Important: The tinplate must not be printed, no colors may be used. For this reason, samova applies adhesive labels to the bare cans, which are easy to remove and are made entirely from environmentally friendly materials and without toxic chemicals. These labels are in samova's well-known and popular colorful world - each variety with its own creative name and color. Incidentally, the first samova products to be awarded the official »Cradle to Cradle« label for the certified circular economy are the tinplate tins for our loose teas.

In the practical tin, the samova premium organic tea stays fresh and aromatic for a long time and well beyond the best-before date. The two-part aroma lid (round lid plus snap-on lid) protects the loose tea from moisture and, in summer, from insects and fruit flies.

Some varieties with larger ingredients and components such as »Heidi's Delight«, »Team Spirit« or »Green Chill« contain 75 or 50 grams respectively. Is loose tea better than tea in a tea bag?

We should not talk about "better" or "worse" in this context. Because that would be the proverbial apples and pears comparison. The tea bag is and remains an ingenious invention, especially for on the go or in the catering trade. Loose tea with large leaves, herbs or pieces of dried fruit is certainly the more sophisticated and often more flavorful option. Incidentally, samova offers the quality and consistency of loose tea one-to-one in individual portions in the generous and voluminous pyramid-shaped space tea bags.

What are the advantages of loose tea and storing it in a metal tin?

Many tea drinkers swear by the variety of loose tea, the individual portioning, the full aroma of the large-volume ingredients and the ceremony of brewing. The tea stays fresh and aromatic for a long time in the practical tin. The two-part aroma lid of the samova tins, with a kind of intermediate lid, also offers the loose tea full protection from moisture and insects. For example, pieces of fruit remain safe from fruit flies in summer. What's more, the beautifully shaped tins from samova look good, so you'll want to put them on a kitchen shelf.

How do I prepare loose tea?

In a pot, in a sieve, in a disposable tea bag - as you wish. We recommend the samova glass jugs (0.4 or 0.8 l) with removable plastic filter (see »Accessories«) for perfect enjoyment of loose tea according to your own portioning and brewing time. The easy-to-use filter makes it possible to end the brewing process at any time with a simple twist of the lid, without having to remove the filter immediately. You can also find the so-called Fusion Bags under accessories in our online store. These are compostable paper bags that you can fill and portion yourself with loose tea.

How long does the tea stay fresh in the tin?

Almost unlimited and far beyond the best-before date. The prerequisite is dry storage and a lid that is always closed so that the loose tea cannot absorb moisture. Our rooibos specialties, such as the classic »Orange Safari«, get even better if they are stored for longer. This is because rooibos matures and, like some wines, becomes more full-bodied in taste with longer storage.

Which varieties of samova are available as loose tea in a tin?

All of samova's current and popular varieties of black tea, green tea, herbal tea, fruit tea and rooibos are available as loose tea in a flavored tin. For some of our black teas such as »Business Trip« or »English Breakfast« and for varieties such as the mint tea »Master Mint«, the chamomile tea »Smooth Operator« or the oolong »Soo Long«, there are empty storage tins in the samova store that can be filled with loose tea from our refill bags.

How much tea does a tin contain?

Most tins contain 100 grams of samova premium organic tea. Some varieties with larger ingredients and components such as »Heidi’s Delight«, »Team Spirit« or »Master Mint« contain 75 or 50 grams respectively. Six particularly popular varieties are also available in mini tins containing 15 to 20 grams - ideal as a small gift to try out.

Are the metal cans recyclable and environmentally friendly?

The samova tea caddies are made of tinplate, a thin sheet of steel whose surface is coated with tin. The advantage of this material is that it can be reused as often as required, provided it is not printed on, and can therefore be kept in the life cycle permanently. All other materials used for our tea tins, such as labels and their printing inks, are completely environmentally friendly and produced without toxic chemicals.
