"Orange Safari is a tribute to the beauty of Africa's wilderness and culture."
Esin Rager, samova founder
The history of Orange Safari
When we developed ten tea varieties in 2002 for our first samova Dance Tea, which was then to be celebrated on November 3, rooibos was still a fairly unknown ingredient in the Western and German tea world. We wanted to give this special plant a stage and at the same time open Hamburg's much quoted "gate to the world" to South Africa. For only there does the coniferous shrub thrive. In the Suid Bokkeveld region of South Africa, it was originally processed into tea by the Khoisan Bushmen who lived there. Whole bunches of the delicate shoots covered with soft needles are harvested - even today often by hand with a sickle. Processing is similar to that of black teas: The harvested material is crushed and left in the air to oxidize, giving it its reddish-brown color. It is then gently dried. Dutch settlers copied this practice in the 18th century and began cultivating the rooibos bush in gardens. For samova founder Esin, who loves black tea but doesn't tolerate it well because of its caffeine content, immediately recognized rooibos as a perfect alternative for low-key teatime. She refined the needles with organic orange oil, real bourbon vanilla and colorful flowers for visual appeal: the Orange Safari recipe was born!
