"It must be love underwater -. There's no more perfect motto for our sensual, weightless tea blend Scuba Garden!"
Esin Rager, founder of samova
The history of Scuba Garden
Some time after the first dancing tea and the start of samova's modern tea culture, founder Esin discovered an article in a Japanese magazine about spirulina algae, which were described as particularly CO2-binding and found their use mainly in cosmetic products. She researched further and found that this form of algae, which is found in both salty waters and freshwater areas, was even recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as early as the 1970s. Africa, Australia, Central America and Southeast Asia are the natural areas of occurrence, the alga is nowadays also cultivated.Esin found the approach exciting, not only to discover the world outside the water for samova tea, but to create a blend as a tribute to the underwater world, especially since life found its origin in the water and ultimately we are also descendants of the creatures that "migrated" out of the underwater world in the course of evolution. Esin recalled the fascinating documentaries of diver Jacques-Yves Cousteau that she had watched with enthusiasm during her childhood. Combined with memories of Sesame Street and Kermit's version of the Beatles song "In the Garden of an Octopus," the name for the tea blend was quickly born: Scuba Garden.
But that's not all. The very popular cinema commercial by the Levi's brand at the end of the nineties, which shows a jeans-clad sailor who is saved from sinking in a storm by courageous mermaids, and the very special song "Under Water Love" by the band Smoke City used in it ultimately formed the most important visual and sonic inspiration foundation on which Esin built her tea creation. And so a blend was created that smells and tastes equally fresh (green rooibos and spirulina algae) and sensual (fruity cranberry pieces) - and to this day is celebrated as one of the top 5 crowd favorites of our teas.
We are a part of this planet
The topics of underwater worlds and marine conservation are more topical today than ever before. Since the premiere of our tea blend Scuba Garden, the situation below sea level has unfortunately not gotten better, but worse and worse. That is why, in addition to our commitment to the Kultur Palast Hamburg Foundation, we have also decided to support the DEEPWAVE association founded in Hamburg in 2003 by deep-sea biologist Ono Groß. The association mainly does public relations work for water protection. This is because many people are not even aware that the health of the oceans is directly linked to their own actions "on land". For example, excessive CO2 emissions in cities, industrial parks and on highways have a direct impact on ocean acidification. Ultimately, this leads to the extinction of living creatures. On these and other topics, interested people can look at various factsheets on deepwave.org to educate themselves, share their knowledge with others and thus bring about a change in thinking and everyday actions. What wonderful forests also provide for the balance of nature under the surface of the sea and how directly we earth beings are connected to each other is described in a very gentle way in the documentary "My Octopus Teacher" by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed. Nominated for an Oscar in 2021, the film tells the story of nature filmmaker Craig Foster, who, after a burnout, begins diving on the South African coast and befriends an octopus. A truly beautiful and poignant glimpse into a real Scuba Garden - and what it can do to us.
