The history of English Breakfast
Beatles, Rolling Stones and The Who. Monty Python and James Bond. David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Queen and Elton John, Punk and New Wave, fashion and design. Britpop from The Smiths to Oasis, Robbie Williams and Harry Potter. Pop-culturally, we have always looked up to Great Britain. And in tea culture, too, the United Kingdom is several years ahead of us.Tea is a national drink in Great Britain. The British are among the biggest tea-drinking nations in the world - at least since tea lover Queen Victoria elevated tea drinking across all social classes to a kind of philosophy of life on the island during her reign (1837-1901). In 1942, during the Second World War, Prime Minister Winston Churchill underlined the importance of the hot beverage for the nation with this quote, even making it a symbol of freedom: "For our soldiers, tea is more important than ammunition."
If you browse a bit on the web, you'll find figures that put the annual per capita consumption of tea on the island at between 187 and 238 liters. Because consumption in the United Kingdom has recently gone downhill somewhat, a tea merchant based there suggested making a link between pop culture and tea culture: "Maybe we'll get James Bond to drink tea in the next movie. Then consumption would certainly go up abruptly."
In the evening at the bar, the world's most famous secret agent drinks vodka martinis, that's well known. But what does James Bond actually drink for breakfast? English Breakfast Tea? English Breakfast Tea is one of the most popular tea blends in the world. It consists of various types of black tea and is usually offered as a broken blend. Broken tea is the term used to describe the degree of leafiness of the tea. Unlike leaf teas, broken teas are crushed by machine.
On the British Isles and in Ireland, people prefer to drink tea for breakfast, as the name suggests. There, the day begins with a strong cup, preferably made from selected Assam varieties and preferably with milk and brown sugar. By the way: In Ireland, the tea is only called "Breakfast Tea" or "Irish Breakfast Tea" in order not to be thrown into the same pot with the unloved British.
In 2015, samova received a request from a luxury hotel operator asking if we could include a classic black tea blend in the collection that was inspired by British breakfast tea. The result is a strong tea whose dark to copper-brown color already hints at its spicy, aromatic taste. The British and many tea lovers in this country are convinced that the full-bodied taste helps to wake up in the morning.
And indeed, caffeine is present in black tea and thus also in English Breakfast. The amount of caffeine is highly soluble in water and is thus one of the first substances to pass from the leaves into the liquid. The amount of caffeine in the tea is therefore almost the same regardless of the infusion time. After five minutes, the tannins then dissolve and the tea becomes more bitter.
The British are extremely unspectacular when it comes to brewing their specialty: put a tea bag in the pot, pour boiling water on it, and then let it steep until it is drunk. The tea bags often don't even have a thread to take them out of the pot again for a possible "brexit." The tea then becomes stronger and more bitter, and occasionally it is stretched later with hot water. Here, the British are obviously not ahead of us. We recommend steeping English Breakfast for about three minutes, which makes it a classic for breakfast and tea time. How lovely!
